The Bureau of Erotic Discourse is in need of help. if you aren't aware of them they are the folks who got sexual assault prevention it's first mention in any BM literature. they make the cute pink buttons, hold workshops, and put up the educational posters in the porta potties.

they have a tribe:
http://brcsap.tribe.net/

i'll be there on Sunday morning Aug 24 to help put up the pottie posters - anyone want to join us? they can also use help taking down the posters after the event. please help!

thanks,
From: Chief of Operations
Subject: Proper Descriptions

1) Cardiac patients should not be referred to as suffering from MUH (messed up heart), PBS (pretty bad shape), PCL (pre-code looking) or HIBGIA (had it before, got it again).

2) Stroke patients are NOT "Charlie Carrots." Nor are rescuers to use CCFCCP(Coo Coo for Cocoa Puffs) to describe their mental state.

3) Trauma patients are not CATS (cut all to shreds), FDGB (fall down, go boom), TBC (total body crunch) or "hamburger helper." Similarly, descriptions of a car crash do not have to include phrases like "negative vehicle to vehicle interface" or "terminal deceleration syndrome."

4) HAZMAT teams are highly trained professionals, not "glow worms."

5) Persons with altered mental states as a result of drug use are not considered "pharmaceutically gifted."

6) Gunshot wounds to the head are not "trans-occipital implants."

7) The homeless are not "urban outdoorsmen," nor is endotracheal intubation referred to as a "PVC Challenge."

8) Do not refer to recently deceased persons as being "paws up," ART (assuming room temperature), CC (Cancel Christmas), CTD (circling the drain), DRT (dead right there) or NLPR (no long playing records).

9) Do not use FTD as Fixing to Die.

I know you will all join me in respecting the cultural diversity of our patients to include their medical orientations in creating proper narratives and log entries."

Hey Guys its GiGi from B.E.D
I need help finding the ranger who took my photo just after sunrise on Tuesday morning in front of the half burned man.
problem is I am a space cadet and can not remember which ranger took the photo... I did walk the permiter passing out buttons Tuesday AM and I think it may have been just around a shift change.

I want that photo :-) it was so cool.
much love

I spoke with a couple of your fellow Rangers on the night of the Temple burn, and they told me that you dont get enough sincere thanks from the populous, especially on burn nights, so again I offer you all my thanks for EVERYTHING you do for us! You truly are appreciated!!

<The tower of "Crude Awakening" will stand 90' above the ground. It is built to resemble an oil derrick. It will hold approx 200 people at a time for a unique view of the City. Friday night after the Mutator plays, it will burn with a large display of pyrotechnics and fuel. It should be quite spectacular. > from BM tribe

sounds big.
Any more of these thru the week?

Watchinig all the stuff going on as everyone gets ready for Burning Man makes me realize I get to be homesick for a whole year. Due to school I missed the Integratron, the Playa Rom and also will miss Burning Man this year, plus all you great Rangers I have come to know and love over the years. But I know some of you have been there also when it comes to school, but I just wanted you all to know I will really miss you this year. I will be back next year and am already planning. You all rock, Have a great Burn and a safe year.

Just a friendly reminder before you head out to the Burn, Check you car before leaving civilization and save yourself a huge hassle later.

Each year the LEO’s are looking for obvious reasons to pull you over, don’t give them an easy reason

Things to look for:

Current registration and tags on vehicle OR moving permit
License plates on front and back of vehicle
Tires-proper inflation check tread and for dry rot cracks
Good spare tire and tools to change tire with
Lights/Signals- do they work on both car/truck and trailer
Red signal cloth- are you extending your load beyond the bumper or do you have a bike rack
Driver’s license-you’d be surprised what you forget when you are in a hurry to leave
Extra gas cans- having an extra 10 gallons can save you from being stranded without gas
Walkie talkies- if you are traveling in a caravan
Cell phone- for when there is service, keep a good charged battery
AAA card for when you need a tow

Hi all, Ranger Atreyu here. Who do I speak with to get on the Ranger early arrival list? I was hoping to come in on Saturday and begin doing shifts on Sunday. Could someone point me in the right direction?

Thank you!

Playa Training on July 7th

So since I live in Reno and have a major need for some playa time the playa training on the 7th was a sure fire bet for me. Is there anyhting special I need to know before going out there? I'm planning on staying a few days and will be bringing all of the camping gear. From what I've been hearing around, you take the same road(turn off to the playa) as you would if you were going to the man. Is that correct? Are we going to be at the man site or farther accross?

Thanks, see ya there.

South Bay Precompression Rangers Wanted

  Greetings my Ranger bretheren.

This weekend, June 8-10, there is a South Bay Regional Pre-compression and we're looking for a few good kilts. If anyone isn't going to Flambe Lounge (or want's to got to both), we could really use a couple of khaki clad hero's to help the party run smoothly. This would probably be a very low key gathering so I don't envision the need for formal shifts. Just a few of us sporting the virtually universal go-to emblem so that folks know that there are people to go to in the event of a problem. All you'll need to do is wander around and be the gorgeous, caring spirits that you always are.

Info on the South Bay Regional Precompression can be found at the bottom of this post.

Unfortunitely due to the small size of the gathering, we're not able to provide comp tickets for volunteers. So if you're already planning to attend or just want to dust off not only your Rangering skills, but your playa gear as well, this would be a perfect opportunity to do so.

Also, if anyone happens to have a couple of FRS radios we could utilize, that would rock.

As of this moment, since noone else grabbed the torch and ran, I'm coordinating the Ranger presence. If anyone else would like to step up to plate and run it instead, please feel free. This is a do-ocracy after all. If anyone believes that there needs to be a more formalized Ranger presence, hey... step right up and hit it outta the park.

(for info see below or go to www.lupinlodge.org )>>>>>>>>>

Whether you've been to Burning Man since 1991, or want to go for the first time this year, come join local burners at Lupin for this THREE DAY 2007 PRECOMPRESSION WEEKEND! Gear up for the playa, do some practice camping (shake the dust out of your tent, test your air mattress, see how warm your playa coat really is!), PARTICIPATE in the creation of a playa-rific experience for everyone who attends. Want to DJ? Practice your FIRE SPINNING performance? Have a new ART project or EL WIRE creation you'd like to show off? Tune in to the 2007 Burning Man "GREEN MAN" theme with new ideas for GIFTING, INTERACTIVE ART, and RADICAL SELF-EXPRESSION! Come to give to your community and be delighted by your fellow aprticipants! Workshops are planned -including instruction on the latest techniques for building evaporation ponds, solar powered campsites, wind powered campsites, massage workshops and exchange, drumming and more.

Burning Man Principles: As a Burning Man Regional event, this gathering is for the entire community and participants are encouraged to embrace the 10 Principles of Burning Man:

Radical Inclusion Communal Effort

Gifting Civic Responsibility

Radical Self-Expression Immediacy

Registration: As a family naturist retreat, Lupin Lodge has certain restrictions and all attendees will be required to register at the gate before admission to the campground (see Lupin Agreements for information).

Please RSVP to realgirl at southbayburners.org so we can get a headcount prior to the event. Camping fees are collected at the gate to cover expenses for Lupin Lodge. In the interest of keeping admission prices low, the Regional will not be using this event as a fundraiser. No vending is permitted inside.

Weekend fees (per person):

9am Friday – 8pm Sunday (3 days, 2 nights) $75

9am Saturday – 8pm Sunday (2 days, 1 night) $65

All day Sunday, beginning at 9am – 8pm $30

Above rates are for "dry camping" only, RV hookups are an additional $15 per day. There are 17 RV sites and over 100 tent sites available on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, 7 Yurts and a large cabin are available for rental.

Facilities: Lupin offers a swimming pool, 2 hot tubs, a sauna, showers and other recreational amenities including free Wi-Fi. (Bathing suits are prohibited in the pool and hot tubs.) There are restrooms near the pool and the clubhouse; additional porta-potties will be provided based on expected attendance.

Meals: The Lupin Clubhouse Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as beer, wine, juices, espressos and a variety of snacks. Although you may prepare your own meals, they will be preparing buffet-style meals over the weekend as well (vegan options will be available at all the buffets).

Friday night, 6pm-9pm – Pasta dinner $10

Saturday night, 5pm-8pm – BBQ $12

Sunday morning, 8am-11am – Breakfast buffet $ 7

A community kitchen is also available with a stove, microwave, coffeemaker, sink etc. (please leave no trace!) Because of high fire danger in the mountains, no open flames or camp stoves may be used for cooking at tent sites. Cooking in enclosed RVs or vans, or use of the communal BBQ grills is permitted.

Music: A DJ booth (with electricity provided) will be set up near the clubhouse lawn, spinning house, break beats, techno and a variety of burner-friendly music 24x7 for the duration of our event (Friday through Sunday evening). Although there will be no shutoff time for the music, we will need to adhere to legal decibel limits. If you would like to take a DJ shift, please contact our DJ coordinator, Big Mike, or join the regional discussion group.

Fire: Fire performers are encouraged to bring your poi and spin to the music! We will have a designated fuel depot, spin-out procedures, and assigned fire safeties with fire extinguishers in order to ensure fire is contained at all times. If you want to spin, please talk to peaceblossom to review safety procedures.

Art: We will have various EL-wire art installations near the clubhouse and camping areas, and you are welcome to bring more! To pre-register your art and discuss placement, email to peaceblossom at sbcglobal.net. There will also be slideshows and short DVDs playing in the NuDome Yurt throughout the weekend.

Participate: We welcome volunteers to ensure our PreCom is successful. If you have experience working Gate, Greeters, Rangers, Registration, Playa Info, Artery etc. then plug in locally and bring your experience to this event! If you would like to be a volunteer, email to realgirl at southbayburners.com with the subject line: PARTICIPATE.
Please cross-post if you are friends or share friends with her.
I just got this note from Eliza, Crypto's sister.
She was in an accident and is in ultra-grave condition.
Please keep her close in your thoughts.

I am Crypto's sister Eliza. I have the following message for you to post. We do not have contact information for many of her friends. When you put up the post, I'll give a comment and let people know they can send stuff to me.

POST:

Crypto was very severely injured Friday, April 27 while trying to board a train in Innsbruck, Austria. Both legs have been amputated about 5" above the knee. She is in an induced coma. An additional operation is scheduled for Wednesday (tomorrow). The hospital she is in has a specialized trauma center and has very good equipment.

Her mother, Sally, will be flying out on Thursday and arriving on Friday. Her sister Magda will be out this weekend. We do not know if she will be conscious by then.

we have set up a blog at

www.chukkasupport.blogspot.com/

Not much there yet. We will try to keep it up to date as we learn about her condition.

We do not know when she will be coming home but when she does, she will need as much love and support as possible. Please send her your thoughts and messages.

hi Rangers! my name is bethie. i'm not a Ranger but Ranger Beauty was kind enough to allow me to join because I was hoping to post ride share info for the last two weekends for Elvis' memorial. He was a good freind of mine and I miss him terribly. I'll be leaving the tribe since i a not a Ranger but before I go, I wanted to say something.

I just wanted to take a moment to say that I think you guys are the best. I was so surprised to run into Rnager Beauty by accident here. She took care of me at Elyssium last year when I had some sort of heatstroke/panic attack/flu induced strangeness happening. I have never forgotten the love and care she showed me, a total stranger. I've never forgotten her kindnes or warmth, how safe I felt, how relieved to know that a RANGER was there so that even though I was sick and scared I was going to be ok. What you all do is so valuable and I wanted to say thanks to all of you for your contribution.

Elvis (or Matt as I knew him) really was your kind of people. He always helped everyone around him, always had a smile on his face (right in between those big goofy ears), was always ready to jump at the chance for fun, for guiding those who needed it, for learning from those who he could learn from, and for just generally making the world a better place. Rangering was so very important to him, as 'Natara has said. At his funeral, his old boss spoke of Matt's expereinces as a Ranger. I was surprised to know that he talked about it that extensively, it was something that he shared with everyone in his life. It made me happy to see so many Rangers trun up at the various memorial services that went on in the last couple of weeks. I'm so grateful that he was able to experience the joy and fulfillment he obviously got from being a Ranger.

You are all awesome. Thanks for what you do and all that you give.

love,
bethie

For those who could not make it down to LA, I was wondering if it would be appropriate to have a Bay Area memorial for him especially since there are so many Rangers in the BA, as well as fellow burners?

Could be as simple as a toasting a drink to him at a pub or something more elaborate.

Thoughts?
Don't be confused; there are two locations for this establishment, one is in Tustin, one is in Lake Forest. The service will be in Tustin. I

Matt died this afternoon. He died with people who loved him near. You can't get better than that.

He was my wonderful campmate. I aspire to be as good a person as he.

I went to watch the sunset this evening and as it set my MP3 player on shuffle pulled up that wonderful live recording, "the Wonder of You.

We love you Elvis, and we always will.
Feel free to let Tom know if you need more info.

---------------------------------------------------------
Calling Rangers!

Salutations Friends!

As our Arizona community has grown, so has the need for a more
organized way to look after ourselves. This year we are trying
something new. The time has come for Arizona to enhance our own
ranger group to support our regional events.

The Toast Rangers are looking for volunteers to help keep Toast! and
other Arizona regional events safe. The Toast Rangers are burners who
volunteer to act as rangers for our AZ events. We help orient folks,
hold fire and safety perimeters, meditate disputes between
participants, and help in medical issues. Being a Toast Ranger does
not commit you to Rangering at Burning man.

Toast Rangers are critical to the functioning of the AZ regional
events. Without them, it would be difficult, if not impossible, for
these events to take place. Being a Toast Ranger is a way to share in
the responsibility of hosting our regional events.

For Toast! we are looking for people who can commit to Rangering for
one or two six-hour shifts during the event, and to help with the
safety perimeters on Saturday night. In addition, we ask that all
rangers attend one of two orientation meetings. The first meeting is
being held on Sunday, April 22nd in Tempe AZ at 4:00pm - 6:30pm. This
get-together is for someone who wants to be a Toast Ranger and be
ready when they get to Toast! The second option is to attend the
Black Rock Ranger orientation which takes place at Toast! on Friday at
10am-3pm. This second meeting is more detailed and covers information
necessary to ranger at Burning man itself, as well as at Toast!. Both
meetings will give you the information you need to be a Toast Ranger.

For more info about the Toast Rangers, check out our web site:

http://toast-rangers.org/

If are interested or have any questions, please contact Blank at
blank@wink-works.com. I?ll send you the site info for the training on
the 22nd.

Yours in Dust,

Blank
- AZ Burner/ Toast Ranger Co-coordinator
----------------------------------------------------------
Creating Art for Toast?

let us know about it so we can let others know. We love art and we already
know of several large scale art projects coming to Toast. Some of it is a
surprise , some of it we have mentioned in previous issues of Burn Toast. if
you want to let others in on what is happening with your art let us know
ASAP. Drop us a note at gary@toast-town.org so we can get the word out.

----------------------------------------------------------

Educating the new People.

Our events and culture are based on several simple customs. We hope that you
will take the time to educate any new people who have never been to a burner
event about how we interact at our events.

A few tips to help.

Leave No Trace! Nobody is here to pick up after you. You must do that
yourself. Don't let it hit the ground and that includes Cigarette butts. You
must come prepared to haul out everything you brought in including your camp
trash. Pack it in, pack it out. Leave no Trace! We are about Radical Self
Reliance, being prepared is part of that.

Respect for alternative lifestyles and cultures is Mandatory! We celebrate
diversity and being different.

At NO TIME is obnoxious or abusive behavior allowed. Being intoxicated is
not an excuse and WILL NOT get you off the hook for it the next day when you
sober up.

This link to our core values, http://azburners.org/corevalues.htm it will
give you an idea how we interact as a group. Please take the time to read it
before you come and educate yourself and the people who are coming with you.

----------------------------------------------------------

That is about it for now! More to come in the next couple weeks!

G&g
Burning up the clock to Burn Toast!

ok, ok, so it's really just a nudge for the event as we are keeping basically all our traffic about it on the NW rangers list instead of spamming allcomm... :) Just had to get a little "we are having one too!!!" out there to the rest of the world and invite anyone passing thru portland this weekend to join us!

Cheers! :D

I realize I am trying to find a needle in a haystack but here goes:

A delightful couple (10 year veterans of Burning Man) camped with us at Sage Camp this year (5:30 and B). Their playa names are 99 and No. 7. They used to live in the Bay Area but now live in Truckee. I have lost their e-mail address and want to keep in contact with them. Does anyone on this list know them? Can you please ask them to contact me or give me hints about how to find two very cool people in an ocean of very cool people?

Marking Space and the Un-rangerly Ranger

This year as first on the Playa it was my job to find and lay claim to a large enough space for the 30+ people in our camp and our infrastructure. We knew we needed a pretty big plot since we had 2 public domes as well as a lot of private shade structures. I found a place big enough for us and we worked out what we would need to house everyone comfortably. Most of our camp arrived on Monday night so we were able to fill in the majority of the space. We knew we still had several groups coming so we marked off some extra space at the back end of our camp with some caution tape that was staked down at about 15 feet intervals. We knew in advance how much space we needed and we wern't trying to be greedy about it.

In the early afternoon on Wednesday this guy who was DRESSED like a ranger decided to take it upon himself to pull out our stakes, roll the tape up and walk off with it without even consulting us first. Most everyone was in the camp at the time working on something. I spotted him in the process and walked over to ask him what he was doing. He was pretty rude to me. He listed off a couple of reasons for his behavior. The BLM is specifically worried about plastic moop. We were taking up what was in his opinion too much space. The stakes were dangerous (even though they were clearly marked). And that "this is not Burning Man" in reference to the caution tape. He just brushed me off, took our tape down, rolled it up and walked off with it. He never once approached anyone in our camp about it. Needless to say, we immediately went about putting our tape right back up after he was gone.

The reason I say he was DRESSED like a ranger was that though he looked like one all in khaki, I didn't see a laminate and none of his clothes had any Ranger embroidery. I don't think he was carrying a radio either. I didn't feel like his demeanor was very rangerly either. I never have experience that kind of rudeness from any Ranger. He was a tall burly pasty blonde white guy in his mid thirties with a very strong french sounding accent. He didn't even slow down the whole time. I wasn't able to even get his name.

The whole thing struck me as odd. Was this guy just a rude and insensitive ranger or was he an imposter posing as a ranger? Does taking down boundry markers fall into the normal duties that a ranger is expected to perform? If so, why didn't he just ask us to take it down instead of making a unilateral decision and removing it himself? If he was an imposter what possible reason could he have to pretend he's a ranger and go around taking down peoples marks? Does anyone here know a Ranger that fits that description?

Utilikilt for Sale

Ranger tested, Ranger approved. I've got a tan "Survival" Utilikilt (waist 38, length 24.5") that needs a new set of hips to rest on. (I've lost weight, so I'm getting a new one.) This BRC-friendly kilt has only seen TWO (count 'em, two) seasons on the playa, and has been meticulously (I had to look that word up before I used it) dry cleaned. Hell, it's absolutely like freakin' new! Check it out on the Utilikilt website, this kilt retails for $250 (yes...the price we pay to look stylish out on the playa), but I'll sell it to a kilt-less Ranger for $190.

So, don't let this offer pass you up. Operators are standing by. Batteries not included. Runs on regular house current. Offer void where prohibited. No coupon required.

Found this over at a wiki for the video game Battlefield2. It's a nice article on radio communications and protocols. Mainly geared towards military comm but I thought it would be a usefull overview and brings up some good points.

If someone could copy and paste the text over to allcomm, that would be nice.

Received this from a friend. The pic shows Agent 9 in a costume I hadn't
seen before flashing his fake ranger laminate.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/10111/213279419/

The friend suggests wanted posters. I'm not sure about that but I figured
some of y'all aint seen this fellow before so....

He "Loves" rangers, wants to be one real bad, is not really completely on
this planet, comes every year and to the best of my recollection is ejected
each year after and for attacking Badger physically. A9 Loves Badger too.

He is the poster boy for institutional patience and radical inclusion.

So I e-mailed the appropriate people regarding early entry for myself & my riders & have not heard back...just needily seeking reassurance that I will be able to attend the Ranger training on Sunday & will be able to get in the gate in time...since we're driving from TX, a day makes a huge amount of difference & if I don't get to Ranger this year, heck I'll take an extra day in CO or Utah & go in as a "civilian".
If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be ever so greatful...or even point the right direction towards me, hey, I'm easy.
Take care!
The site is outrageous. Each campsite has it's own oak tree, the pool's heated, the showers hot, bathrooms plentiful, and the entertainment fine.

Alot of SoCal rangers are going to the LA Event the same weekend and so far we have only three for Elysium. It's NOT a "sanctioned" event so Black Rock Ranger gear is verboten.

Hi from Ranger Tony Danza

Hi there,

This was my first year as a Ranger and I did my mentor shifts with Haiku and Tarzie, and worked dirt shifts with Alabama and 2Wilde.

If you want to know why I'm named "Tony Danza" ... well, you'll just have to ask Speedbump. It's all his fault.

Glad to be here!

Tony Danza out.

Calling for Rangers at SD Decompression

Hi Y'all. I'm coordinating the rangers for Fuego de los Muertos, San Diego's regional decompression. The appropriate tribute is being rendered unto the BRAF so this is an official BM event and this is a call to all those migratory rangers seeking to practice their art with us.

I've posted the particulars after my sig but here are some other things;

All volunteers must buy a ticket. $35 advance and I believe as much as $55 at the gate.
Advance sales aren't happening yet as the website isn't up. I'm told this will happen w/in the week.
Though it's a three day event we could use whatever time you can spare to ranger : ).
It's a nice place to camp but due to being in a wooded area there won't be all the fire you'd expect at BM.
I had a great time last year.

Contact me off-com if you're interested. Uber Guber, Pullease come : ).

Sas

"In a secret conclave held deep in a bunker in ultra-conservative orange county, a cadre of egomaniacal pseudo-burners got together and planned an artless coup. To deceive the naive do-gooders elsewhere in the Orange County and San Diego areas, these pod people decided to call it "OC/SD Decom"

No, that's not right....

In a glorious burst of radically inclusive experimental community, all the burners in Orange and San Diego counties spontaneously materialized together on a hilltop in unanimous communion, merging into a hive mind of intense agreement. They called this "decom"

No, that's not quite right either...

Announcing Fuego de los Muertos Dos!

Born amidst some confusion but no lack of effort, the second OC / SD Decompression event will take place the weekend of October 21-23 at Outdoor World Retreat (<http://www.outdoorworldretreat.com>www.outdoorworldretreat.com) near Boulevard, CA. We're continuing the theme from last year's very successful event, in honor of Halloween, Samhain, and Dia de los Muertos. As some view Burning Man, it's a time to consider and celebrate fire, death and rebirth: creating art, music, theater, life and love.

This is a weekend camping event in a high desert campground. Gates will open at 4pm Friday, October 21. Tickets will be available later this week, starting at $35 and graduating up to $55 as we approach the event. Stay tuned for an announcement about ticket ordering. We'll have a website up at <http://www.fuegodelosmuertos.org>www.fuegodelosmuertos.org shortly with information about the tickets, location, camps, performers, financial details and all. There's already a yahoo group for planning and discussion at <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OC-SD-decom.>groups.yahoo.com/group/OC-SD-decom. If you'd like to help in the planning and doing, please join.

This is a participation event. While we all appreciate the great contributions made by musicians and artists, there will be no free tickets. Everyone here is an artist! Some have already volunteered and devoted their time in planning. Many of these have communicated about details or needs for participants, ideas and materials:

Inspector Gadget: Event Organizer
Michael Hennig: Art Director
Zen Coyote: Theme Camp Placement
Marie-Pierre: Greeters
Sasquatch: Rangers

We also have several people involved in the stage production and management, and you'll be hearing from the stage manager very soon with a list of committed performers and a call for more. This year, we'll have one outdoor stage for live performances, plus DJ's, music and dancing in theme camps.

Last year's event attracted over 400 burners for a long cold last weekend in October. This year will be one week earlier, and hopefully a little warmer - but be prepared nonetheless.

See you at Fuego de Los Muertos in just a month!

love,
Smoke Blower

On joining the rangers

I've decided to join the Rangers.

I camped with Camp Stimulation this year, we were the free coffee camp in the 9:00 plaza. Our camp was bordered by Outpost Tokyo on two sides and since rangers LOVE coffee I got to make friends with quite a few Rangers. It took me a while but I tracked down Da Mongolian and cornered him at the bathrooms behind Ranger HQ on saturday night. I even chatted with Danger for a few minutes on monday afternoon. I think I really got a good feel for what you are out there to do.

Rangers exist to protect the people of burning man from the themselves. each other, the environment, and the law enforcment. Most of this is accomplished by helping people, listening, mediating, and answering questions. They are non confrontational and do not try to work from a positon of authority. Often they will merely suggest a wiser course of action. They are willing to fully commit themselves to helping you but are also willing to let you make your own mistakes if you insist.

I spent a lot of time doing just those things myself this year. I gave anyone who needed it directions, advice, water, and more directions because they were too high to understand the first five times. Helping people makes me feel good about myself.

Next year will be my third burn. Last year I was tjere mostly to party and was fortunate to come up with a great camp. I spent a large majority of my time dancing and looking for love (didn't find it) I was a very well prepared virgin, I'd wanted to go for many years and was never able to do it before so I had a good idea of what was ahead. This year I came up to work, and boy did I ever. I brought my love with me as well as a ton of equipment, sweat, and elbow grease. Our shade structure was the 30' tall orange and white parachute at 9:00 that could be seen lit up day and night from almost everywhere on the playa. We sank and pulled up the 4' earth anchors by hand, a full foot longer than the ones holding up the man which DPW puts in with a Bobcat. I only really got to party 3 out of the 9 nights that I was there.

But it was worth every ounce of work. Rather than a sense of depression afterwards I feel elated. We got out onto the playa and did exactly what we set out to do and we did a damn good job. We served an incredible amount of coffee to the thirsty masses and provided them with a very comfortable place to enjoy it. My only regret is I saw far too much of my camp and not enough of the rest of the playa, I missed many things I very much wanted to see. I had a much better time this year even though I missed a lot of the great art.

As a ranger your work takes you all over the city, you get to see the sights and be a benevolent participant. If you are lucky everything is calm and everyone has fun. Sometimes things can get pretty hairy fast in the desert and you should be able to handle yourself professionally. This includes knowing when to get out of the way and let the authories do their jobs. I know there's a lot more to than that and I'm looking foreward to learning it.

Early?

I was telling a soon-to-be BRC campmate (themecamp leader) about my arriving early (Saturday 27 afternoon/evening) because I'm scheduled to do Ranger training Sunday (on Playa), but he said if I'm not on a list I'll be waiting outside until Monday morning.

Hmmm... that's not good, so I thought I'd better check. I email'd "rangers (at) burningman (dot) com" and SeaDog (at the suggestion of a returning ranger), but I've not heard back (it's likely they're busy or already out there - the email was sent just last Wednesday).

Since it's no good taking an extra day off work, driving a couple of thousand miles, just to be held up at the gate, and to top it off end up not being a Ranger because I didn't ensure I was on a list, I thought I'd better ask as it's less than a week, and I didn't hear back, so this tribe seemed like the next best thing. Hence this message. But maybe there's a better online contact point?

I am listed in the http://rangers.burningman.com/display.php (I'm LoudSpeaker), maybe that's good enough?

To everyone I know and love,

It has been 6 1/2 months since I was diagnosed with cancer, and the time has now come for me to sit and write a letter to all of you. A letter of Love, Gratitude, and some information about how I am doing now.

For some, this letter may have come sooner than they had expected, and for others, a little late.

But for me, the time is now. Not a minute sooner, not a moment later. To those of you that were wondering, thank you for your concern and infinite patience!

I never thought that my existence here would be terribly important to anyone, I feel so blessed and comforted to have you all in my life. We are all so blessed. What an amazing gift we have been given. Each Other.

I have learned so much in such a short period of time, and am still VERY MUCH "in school", that it seems impossible to tell you everything, but I will try to tell you the things that have been important and life affirming for me in the last several months, and give you an update as to what is happening with me now.

The first thing that I have learned is that if nothing else, a life threatening disease like cancer will get you fucking present, in your body, in the moment, right here right NOW like NOTHING else that I have experienced in this lifetime. Truly amazing. It allowed me to go inward, which is something that I was never very prolific at. Those that know me well, know that I am usually an "outward" kind of guy. It's the performer in me, and one of the millions of masks that I wear to keep myself separate from myself and my usefulness to others. Those that know me REALLY well, know that this kind of contemplation was WAY over due. So that's exactly what I did. I went "inside" as much as I have been able to. I separated myself in order to have a LONG OVERDUE conversation with myself. (We are still talking, by the by. The conversation is getting interesting).

I moved to Atherton shortly before my treatment started, as an Angel just happened to fall into my lap. She is a friend of a friend. A cancer survivor herself. She handed me the keys to her amazingly beautiful home and said, "Here. HEAL!", and then she went to France to live.

I went through my radiation treatment at Stanford every day for almost two months, and at the same time was at Valley Medical Center once a week for chemo. For those of you that want the gory details, yes...it was fairly painful and ugly, but it is amazing how resilient the human spirit is. I was scared first, sick later, and glad it is over now. That's it in a nutshell. The last several months have been about healing. The radiation to my throat was pretty damaging, and has taken a while to recover just normal functions like swallowing, saliva function, taste, etc. It is a VERY slow recovery process, but is getting better everyday. I was on a diet for months of "Ensure", and am now eating some solid food everyday! (MAN the shit I took for granted!). I had my feeding tube removed about 2 months ago and am eating everything by mouth now.

I have lost a LOT of weight. Over 75 pounds, but hey, as Larry told me... "You WERE kind of chubby Curtis, you needed to lose it!" Ahhhhhh.... more blessings.

Now? Well... I am starting to get out and about everyday and it feels really good. I have been "showing up". Fuck! I missed you guys!

How is the Cancer? Gone. GONE.

For now I get tested every few weeks, and hopefully it stays away. I will keep you posted. Call me cured if you want. Call me in "remission". I don't care. Just do me a favor, please? If someone asks you how I am doing? Tell them that the cancer is gone. GONE. And tell them that the power of love did it. Wanna see some magic? You just did. Wanna see a miracle? There it is. Did you see it? I did. Fucking brilliant. And I am grateful beyond measure.

To my Dad, thanks for telling me you were proud of me. You always were, and told me so all the time, but before I couldn't hear it. I was too angry. I wanted things to look differently. They do now. I love you, and NO I will NOT play cribbage with you! :)

To my Mom, NOBODY else is allowed to rub my back while I am throwing up except you. (Sorry everyone?!?!) I loved sitting and painting pictures with you while I couldn't talk. Could we PLEASE do that again sometime? Soon? I would love that.

To Andi, thank you for seeing me. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for being afraid for me. Thank you for holding me while I cried. Thank you for supporting me. Thank you for pushing me harder and harder to stop complaining and get on with it. Thank you for listening to me for endless hours of brutal insane drama nonsense. Thank you for wanting to make love with me when I felt like the ugliest man in the entire world. But most of all, thank you for being my partner through what hopefully is an experience that we will only have had once in this lifetime. A sacred moment, if you will. Thank you, Andi for showing up when I needed you most. I will always love you.

To my brother Glen. Oh boy Oh boy oh boy. We did it this time. Connected even more than we ever have. I have more fondness and genuine care for you than I could have imagined one could have for another. Thank you brother for EVERYTHING!

To Heidi Hi Hi Hi. Thank you for the energy energy energy energy energy energy energy energy. You never had to do a thing for me to see you, and your integrity, and your brilliance. I have adored you since the day we met. Thank you from the bottom of my SOUL for doing everything in your power to make sure I was taken care of. Thank you for Solstinox. Watch closely, Heidi... this one isn't finished being written yet....

To Mary... Thanks for working hard at keeping this friendship... it's been worth it, huh??? The best is yet to come...

HEY KARIE..... I love you! Thanks for being worried, for keeping your eye on the road, and being there for me when I was REALLY sick....now get over here and PICK UP YOUR FUCKING LOTIONS! :)

To Marian... I have searched my whole life for a friend like you. One who doesn't need a thing from the other. The ease in which we have done this dance together is a testament to true loving presence between strangers. WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG? (meow)

To all of you who helped Heidi put on Solstinox.... And to those of you who CAME to Solstinox....., what the FUCK you guys????? That was AMAZING!!! Can we do that EVERY year for someone else each time? Count ME in! It helped me so much in so many ways! Took the heat off financially, helped me to remain strong. But lets face it people, it wasn't about "Curtis". Because you and I both know that as long as we can use our creative energy to benefit something in need, anything, we serve ourselves, and the world around us greatly, in the most profound ways. I am grateful for what you all did for me. Beyond words. But I must say, that if my cancer gave us a reason and permission to start and CONTINUE to serve something OTHER than ourselves? Then it was ALL worth it. I love you guys. Thanks!

To ALL of Burning Silicon, when I moved out here last year, I didn't really know why I had come. I arrived with a loud voice. Some of you embraced me, others felt a bit put off. But when I got scared, you circled the wagons around me, told me I was safe, and showed me the way home. Thank you forever for teaching me about community and family. YAY! Thanks you guys. I love you all.

To my best friend Arthur. Where do I begin. You have been my best friend since we were kids, and I feel like we are just getting started. So much to do, so little time. NOBODY knows me like you, Artie. Sometimes that is an awfully vulnerable place for me to be with you, sometimes I don't like it, but I know you hold it with love. Thank you for helping me along my journey. Thank you for crying your own tears for my terror and fear. Thank you for reaching out to the world for some help and compassion for me, and, inevitably NOT just for me, but for us all. I am HONORED to be called your best friend. You and I made a pact when we were 16 to meet at a pre-described destination when we were 50. I have every intention of being there. I will NOT let you down. I love you Arthur. So much.

And last, but CERTAINLY the most important people of all... To all of those who have called themselves so lovingly, "Friends of Curtis", I want to tell you what happened to me when you were building that tribe... The doctors had given me pretty bad news, and I was not sure that I wanted to, nor had the strength to do all the things they wanted me to do to save my life. Radical neck dissection. Neck muscle removal. Radiation to the throat and mouth. Chemical injection into my blood. All with a strong possibility of dying anyway. I asked the doctors what would happen if I did nothing at all, and they told me I would be dead within 1-2 years. So, I started to look at ALL my options, including suicide. You see, I have never been afraid of dying. But I do NOT want to be sick, in bed, fighting for no reason. So, I went onto the internet, and typed in the search box "painless suicide methods". I came upon a site called the "Church of Euthanasia". I was frightened, alone, and very confused. They listed every form of suicide you can imagine, with the pros and cons. Everything from jumping off of a bridge to 20lb nitrous tanks (my personal fav). Simultaneously, I was getting e-mail after e-mail after e-mail from people I had not ever met before, sending love, hands of friendship, LOTS OF MONEY for my treatment and recovery, concern, love, more love... this amazing well of life force. Juicy, slobbery, fucking sexy ass LOVE! I decided INSTANTLY that I was going to have surgery and treatment, and, everyone who knows me well will tell you that I never talked of my "demise" again. You showed me how to feel like I was really worth something.

You saved my life.

I love you all so deeply for that, that I still cry when I think of what that felt like. My hope is that we will all continue to spread that kind of love around to each other ALL the time, for ANY reason, no matter WHO we are. For me, it's NOT "about the art, stupid". It's about the connection between us. The reflection. The mirror. The love.

The art, the party, the party etc... are just vehicles to get us to find each other, and ourselves. Thank you for teaching me this very valuable lesson. I am honored to be connected in this way to you all.

As far as singing goes... I cannot sing so well these days, but I am trying. My voice will surely be different. That's ok. I am different now too.

As a gift to you all, a song that I wrote as a right of passage some years ago. Put it to whatever music plays in your head, and if you see me on the playa, ask me. I would love to try to sing it for you. :)

DYING FLAME

Here we all sit. Here we remember.
Thinking of times that have come and gone.
And if we can choose to live in the moment,
The memories will fade like the dusk and the dawn.

I came to this place, with some trepidation.
The newness brought fear, in spite of each face.
You held out your arms, and wrapped me inside them.
Your warmth and your love cannot be replaced.

And if we all sing, and raise up our voices,
And try to see clearly the choices remained.
*Todah Adonai, who blows on the embers...
Blow life in this dying flame.

Hugs and Kisses,

Curtis

*(the God that IS us)

Sometimes i look up high and then I think there might
just be a better life.
Away from all we know, that's where I wanna go,
out on the wild side
and I wish I was, o-oo-o-oh, a wild west hero.

I'd ride the desert sands and through the prairie lands,
try'n to do what's right.
The folks would come to me, they'd say, we need you here.
I'd stay there for the night.
Oh, I wish I was, o-oo-o-oh, a wild west hero.

Anyone else out there NOT going this year? It's gotten down to a less than 1% chance that I can make it. My transportation issues have been more or less resolved (some wonderful campmates have lent me their car!) but I'm struggling in my class at school so much, I don't think that heading to the desert for the weekend would be a good idea.

I would however be up for some type of a social or beach burn Saturday night.

Any other takers? Anyone able to host? Already know of a 'open' gathering?

I've started a discussion on this over on the main Burning Man tribe (bm.tribe.net
and I'd like to keep it all in one place, so if you have anything to say, could you go over there to post it?

Thanks!!!

Hi,

I'm part of a theme camp called The Tribe of the Chattering Monks. We've got a number of fire performers in the camp and we'd like to set up a fire ring in our camp to practice and entertain with. I was wondering, is this ok given our location? What is the policy regarding fire performance within a theme camp? Our address is 8:30 and Mercury.

Any info would be helpful and appreciated.

Thanks!
